What health conditions and drug interactions matter for obesity and weight management medicines?
Short answer
Your physician needs a full list of medicines, supplements, and health conditions before prescribing weight management treatment. Important concerns may include pregnancy, severe stomach-emptying problems, and a history of certain thyroid cancers. Risks differ by medicine. A licensed physician in your state decides whether treatment is appropriate.
Tell your physician about every prescription, over-the-counter medicine, vitamin, and supplement you take. Include diabetes drugs and any weight loss products, even if you buy them without a prescription. Some combinations can raise the risk of low blood sugar or other side effects. Do not change existing medicines without guidance.
For certain GLP-1 medicines, a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 makes treatment inappropriate. Also discuss past pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, kidney problems, diabetic eye disease, and severe problems with stomach emptying. These conditions need a careful review rather than a one-size-fits-all decision.
Weight loss medicines should not be used during pregnancy. Tell your physician if you are breastfeeding or planning pregnancy, since stopping instructions differ by drug. Some medicines can affect oral birth control, especially during dose changes. Before surgery or sedation, tell the procedure team about your treatment so they can give medicine-specific instructions. Never decide on your own to hold or restart a dose.
