Who may be a candidate for a custom snoring appliance?
Short answer
A custom snoring appliance may be an option for an adult whose teeth, gums, and jaw can support it, after possible sleep apnea is assessed. A dentist licensed in your state decides if dental treatment is appropriate. Active dental disease, loose teeth, or jaw problems may affect that decision.
Whether a snoring appliance is appropriate depends on more than how loudly you snore. A dentist needs to check your teeth, gums, bite, and jaw movement. The device must fit securely and place forces on the mouth safely. Your medical history and any sleep test results also help guide the choice.
Untreated gum disease, loose teeth, significant tooth decay, or certain jaw joint problems may make an appliance unsuitable or require care first. Missing teeth and dentures can also affect which designs, if any, are possible. These issues need an individual review rather than a simple online checklist.
A dentist licensed in your state decides whether dental treatment is appropriate. If sleep apnea is present, a physician and dentist may need to coordinate care. An oral appliance is not the right choice for every type or severity of sleep apnea. Tell both clinicians about prior jaw pain, dental work, and any current sleep apnea treatment before starting a device.
