How can a custom oral appliance help with snoring?
Short answer
A custom oral appliance may reduce snoring by holding the lower jaw forward to help keep the airway open during sleep. Results vary. A dentist licensed in your state must decide whether it is appropriate. Possible sleep apnea should be evaluated before treating snoring with an appliance.
A common type of custom oral appliance fits over your teeth and gently holds your lower jaw forward while you sleep. This position can create more room behind the tongue and reduce airway narrowing. It may reduce snoring in suitable patients. Results vary. It is not a cure or a guarantee of quiet sleep.
Before you start, a medical evaluation should address whether your snoring could be related to sleep apnea. A dentist licensed in your state checks your teeth, gums, jaw joints, and bite to decide whether an appliance is appropriate. Custom devices need fitting and may need gradual adjustment under dental supervision.
Some appliances are also used for selected people with obstructive sleep apnea, with medical and dental follow-up. A quieter night alone does not show that apnea is controlled. Follow-up testing may be needed. Do not move the jaw setting farther forward on your own to chase faster results. Report jaw pain, tooth pain, or bite changes to your dentist.
