Which medicines or substances can interact with Lidocaine + diphenhydramine rinse?

Short answer

Have your physician or pharmacist review all medicines before you use Lidocaine + diphenhydramine rinse. Other lidocaine products, diphenhydramine, sleep aids, opioids, and alcohol may increase risks. Some heart medicines also need review. Even though you spit out the rinse, some medicine may still be absorbed through your mouth.

Give your physician and pharmacist a full list of prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, vitamins, and supplements. Include mouth gels, sprays, rinses, skin patches, allergy pills, and sleep aids. Some products contain lidocaine or diphenhydramine without making that obvious on the front label.

Using other numbing products may increase the risk of lidocaine toxicity. Diphenhydramine can add to the effects of alcohol, opioids, sleep medicines, and other drugs that cause drowsiness. Medicines that cause dry mouth, constipation, or trouble urinating may also need review. Certain heart rhythm medicines can raise concerns when used with lidocaine.

Spitting out the rinse limits swallowing but does not rule out absorption or interactions. Avoid alcohol during use, and ask before adding another pain or mouth care product. Do not stop a regular prescription medicine on your own to make room for this rinse. A licensed physician in your state decides whether the treatment fits your health needs. Follow your prescribing physician and label for all dosing instructions.
