What side effects can Lidocaine + diphenhydramine rinse cause?
Short answer
Lidocaine + diphenhydramine rinse can cause mouth numbness, irritation, dry mouth, or changes in taste. Drowsiness or dizziness may occur, especially if swallowed. Stop use and seek urgent help for trouble breathing, severe swelling, seizures, fainting, or blue or gray skin. Report bothersome effects to your prescribing physician.
Possible side effects include mouth numbness, stinging, irritation, dry mouth, and taste changes. Numbness can make it easier to bite your tongue or cheek. It can also make swallowing less safe. Avoid food, drinks, and gum until numbness wears off, and follow the waiting time on your label.
Diphenhydramine may cause drowsiness or dizziness if enough is absorbed or swallowed. Do not drive if you feel sleepy or lightheaded. Using too much lidocaine can cause serious effects involving the brain or heart. Never swallow the rinse or exceed the dose set by your prescribing physician and label.
Stop using the rinse and call 911 for trouble breathing, swelling of the tongue or throat, a seizure, or collapse. Blue or gray lips or skin can signal a rare blood oxygen problem and also need emergency care. For accidental swallowing or an extra dose, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. Contact your physician for irritation that persists, worsening sores, or other concerning symptoms.
