When does gum disease need in-person or urgent care instead of an online visit?
Short answer
Gum disease needs an in-person dental exam to assess gum pockets, tartar, and possible bone loss. Seek urgent dental care for pus, fever with dental symptoms, facial swelling, or worsening pain. Trouble breathing or swallowing is an emergency. Online care cannot provide cleanings, X-rays, drainage, or other dental procedures.
An online visit can help review symptoms, health history, and medicines. A licensed dentist in your state decides whether dental treatment is appropriate. However, photos and video cannot fully show the depth of gum pockets or the condition of the bone supporting your teeth.
Arrange an in-person exam for repeated bleeding, lasting bad breath, receding gums, or loose teeth. Professional probing and X-rays may be needed. Online prescribing, when appropriate, does not replace cleaning below the gums or treating a dental abscess.
Seek urgent dental care for pus, a painful swollen area, rapidly worsening pain, facial swelling, or fever with dental symptoms. These signs can point to an infection that needs a procedure, not just a rinse. Do not delay care while waiting for an online appointment or a shipped medication.
Call 911 or go to an emergency department for trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling spreading toward the neck or eye, or severe illness. Heavy bleeding that will not stop also needs urgent evaluation. Do not try to drain a swollen gum yourself.
