When does anxiety need urgent help rather than a routine visit?
Short answer
Anxiety needs urgent attention if you feel unsafe, have thoughts of suicide, or cannot manage basic daily needs. If you are in crisis, call or text 988. Call 911 for immediate danger or a medical emergency. Do not assume new chest pain or severe breathing trouble is a panic attack.
Do not wait for a routine telehealth reply if you feel unsafe or think you might hurt yourself. If you are in crisis, call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. You can reach out for emotional distress even if you are not sure whether it is an emergency.
Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department if there is immediate danger, an overdose, or a medical emergency. New or severe chest pain, fainting, and major trouble breathing need medical attention. Panic attacks can cause intense physical symptoms, but it is not safe to assume anxiety is the cause.
Seek prompt clinical help if anxiety prevents you from eating, sleeping, or caring for yourself. Severe agitation, confusion, or sudden major changes in behavior also need urgent review, especially after starting or changing medication.
If possible, ask a trusted person to stay with you while you get help. Verra's routine online and video visits are not a substitute for emergency care.
