Mental health · FAQ
What side effects should I watch for with mental health medication?
Short answer
Side effects depend on your mental health medication. Bupropion may cause dry mouth, nausea, trouble sleeping, or anxiety. Other treatments can cause different effects, including dizziness or sexual side effects. Review your exact prescription with the physician or pharmacist, and seek urgent help for serious or sudden symptoms.
Each mental health medication has its own risks. Bupropion may cause dry mouth, nausea, headache, trouble sleeping, or anxiety. It can also raise blood pressure and carries a risk of seizures. Your health history, dose, and other medications can affect that risk.
Other medicines for anxiety or depression may cause stomach upset, sleep changes, dizziness, or sexual side effects. Some medicines used for performance anxiety can lower heart rate or blood pressure. Ask your physician or pharmacist which effects apply to your exact prescription and what to do if they occur.
Report new or worsening mood symptoms, severe restlessness, or unusual behavior promptly. Antidepressants carry warnings about suicidal thoughts and behavior, especially in children, teens, and young adults. Monitoring matters when starting treatment or changing a dose.
Call 911 for a seizure, trouble breathing, or another medical emergency. If you are in crisis, call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Do not change your dose or add another medicine to manage side effects without professional guidance.
