What side effects can topical treatments for premature ejaculation (PE) cause?
Short answer
Topical premature ejaculation treatments can cause burning, irritation, redness, or unwanted numbness. Excess numbness may affect pleasure or erections. Stop use and contact your clinician if you develop a rash or lasting irritation. Trouble breathing, blue or gray lips, or severe dizziness needs emergency medical care.
Side effects depend on the ingredients, strength, and amount used. Topical numbing products may cause stinging, redness, itching, or reduced sensation beyond what you wanted. Some people have trouble keeping an erection when sensation is too low. Skin irritation or an allergic reaction can also occur.
Use only the prescribed or labeled amount. Do not apply a product to broken or irritated skin unless your physician specifically tells you to. Avoid combining numbing products, and do not cover the treated area unless the instructions call for it. These actions can change how much medicine your body absorbs.
Stop using the product and ask your clinician about persistent numbness, rash, or irritation. Rare but serious reactions can occur with some local anesthetics. Call 911 for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, blue or gray lips, fainting, or a seizure. If you apply too much or someone swallows the product, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. Do not wait for symptoms before asking for guidance.
