What is premature ejaculation (PE), and how is it different from finishing early sometimes?
Short answer
Premature ejaculation means ejaculating sooner than you or your partner want, most of the time, in a way that causes distress. Finishing early once in a while does not necessarily mean you have PE. A licensed physician can review your pattern, sense of control, and concerns.
Premature ejaculation, or PE, is a pattern of ejaculating sooner than you want, with little sense of control, that causes distress. It is a common sexual concern. It is not a personal failure, and it does not mean you do not care about your partner.
There is no single time goal that fits every person or couple. A physician considers more than the number of minutes before ejaculation. They also ask how often it happens, whether you can delay it, and how it affects your well-being or relationships. An occasional early ejaculation, especially during stress or a new sexual experience, does not by itself establish PE.
PE may have been present since your first sexual experiences, or it may start after a period without this concern. That difference can help guide the evaluation. Treatment may involve behavioral techniques, counseling, or medication when appropriate. Results vary. A licensed physician in your state decides which options fit your health history and needs.
