What side effects can melasma creams cause?

Short answer

Melasma creams can cause burning, redness, dryness, itching, or peeling. Risks depend on the ingredients and how long you use them. Some medicines can cause unwanted skin color changes or skin thinning. Stop the product and contact your physician for severe irritation, blistering, or new darkening of treated skin.

Side effects depend on the medicine in your melasma cream. Tretinoin and some other ingredients can cause dryness, stinging, redness, and peeling. Irritation can also leave darker marks, especially in darker skin tones. Using extra cream or applying it more often than prescribed can raise these risks.

Hydroquinone can irritate skin. Rarely, it can cause a hard-to-treat blue-black discoloration, especially with prolonged or improper use. Creams that contain a corticosteroid can cause skin thinning, visible small blood vessels, or acne-like bumps when used too long or incorrectly.

Ask your physician which symptoms are expected and which mean you should stop. Contact them for ongoing burning, a rash, marked peeling, or new darkening. Severe blistering or swelling needs prompt medical care. Trouble breathing or swelling of the tongue or throat requires emergency help.

A gentle cleanser and plain moisturizer may make your routine easier to tolerate. Results vary. Do not try to scrub away peeling skin. Share the full list of your skin products so your physician can check for added irritation.
