What side effects can Custom antimicrobial rinse cause?

Short answer

Custom antimicrobial rinse can cause tooth or tongue staining, taste changes, mouth irritation, and more tartar buildup. Being alcohol-free does not prevent these effects. Stop using it and get emergency help for trouble breathing or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, which may signal a serious allergy.

Chlorhexidine can stain teeth, the tongue, and some dental work. It can also change how food tastes, irritate the mouth, or increase tartar buildup. Some stains may need professional cleaning. Tell your prescriber about ongoing burning, soreness, peeling inside the mouth, or taste changes that bother you. Do not increase your dose to try to improve your treatment.

Although uncommon, a serious allergic reaction can occur. Stop the rinse and get emergency help for trouble breathing, faintness, widespread hives, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. Tell your prescriber before starting if you have ever reacted to chlorhexidine, including products used during dental or medical procedures.

This formula is alcohol-free, but it can still cause irritation or an allergic reaction. Ask the pharmacy for the full ingredient list if you have allergies. If someone swallows more than a small accidental amount, or a child swallows any, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 for advice. Call 911 for severe symptoms.
