What should I do if pilocarpine makes me sweat a lot?
Short answer
If pilocarpine causes heavy sweating, contact your prescriber and watch for dehydration. Drink fluids as your health plan allows, and use extra caution in hot weather or during exercise. Seek urgent care for confusion, fainting, or severe weakness. Do not change your dose without advice from your prescriber.
Pilocarpine can increase sweating because it stimulates sweat glands as well as salivary glands. Heavy sweating can cause fluid loss and dehydration. Contact your prescriber if sweating is new, bothersome, or hard to manage during normal daily activities.
Drink fluids regularly unless your clinician has told you to limit them. If you have heart or kidney disease or a fluid restriction, ask how much fluid is appropriate for you. Do not force large amounts of water without guidance. Take extra care during exercise, hot weather, or time in a hot indoor space.
Watch for thirst, dark urine, urinating less than usual, dizziness, or unusual weakness. Seek urgent care for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, or an inability to keep fluids down. Severe symptoms may require emergency care rather than an online message.
Keep notes on when the sweating happens in relation to each dose. Share any other symptoms and medicines with your care team. Your physician licensed in your state can decide whether your dose or treatment should change.
