Who may not be able to use pilocarpine for dry mouth?
Short answer
Pilocarpine is not appropriate for everyone. People with uncontrolled asthma or certain eye conditions should not use it. Heart disease, lung disease, and other health concerns need careful review. A physician licensed in your state decides whether treatment is appropriate after checking your medical history and current medicines.
Pilocarpine requires a health review before treatment. It should not be used by people with uncontrolled asthma or when narrowing the pupil is unsafe, such as with certain forms of glaucoma or acute inflammation of the iris. A past allergic reaction to pilocarpine also matters.
Tell your physician if you have controlled asthma, chronic bronchitis, COPD, heart disease, or heart rhythm problems. Also report gallstones, kidney stones, liver disease, and any eye conditions. Pilocarpine can affect more than saliva, including breathing, heart function, vision, and other body secretions.
If you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding, discuss this before using pilocarpine. Safety information may be limited, and your physician needs to weigh the possible risks and benefits for your situation.
A physician licensed in your state decides whether treatment is appropriate. Include all prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, and supplements in your visit. Do not leave out inhalers or eye drops. Your full history helps the physician assess risks and whether another approach should be considered.
