What medicines and drinks can interact with sildenafil and tadalafil?

Short answer

Both sildenafil and tadalafil interact with nitrates, riociguat, and some other medicines. Alpha blockers and blood pressure medicines may increase dizziness or low blood pressure. Heavy drinking can add to these risks. Share all medicines, supplements, and alcohol use with your prescriber before starting either erectile dysfunction treatment.

Nitrates and riociguat must not be combined with sildenafil or tadalafil. These combinations can cause dangerously low blood pressure. Alpha blockers, which may be used for prostate symptoms or high blood pressure, also need careful review. Other blood pressure medicines may add to dizziness or fainting risk.

Some drugs change how quickly your body clears sildenafil or tadalafil. Examples include certain antibiotics, antifungal medicines, and HIV medicines. Your prescriber may need to adjust the dose or choose a different treatment. Grapefruit and grapefruit juice can also affect medicine levels; ask about them before use.

Heavy alcohol use can increase dizziness and low blood pressure. It may also make erections more difficult. Results vary. Ask your prescriber whether alcohol is safe for you rather than assuming a certain number of drinks is safe for everyone.

Provide a full list of prescriptions, over-the-counter products, supplements, and recreational substances. Include other ED products, even those bought online. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own to use sildenafil or tadalafil.
