What can I do for mouth sores caused by braces or dentures?
Short answer
Mouth sores from braces or dentures need attention to the rubbing or poor fit that caused them. Contact your dentist or orthodontist for an adjustment. Dental wax may reduce friction from braces, and gentle oral care may limit irritation. Results vary. Do not cut wires or reshape dentures yourself.
Braces and dentures can rub against the cheeks, lips, tongue, or gums. A sharp wire or rough edge may keep reopening the same spot. Contact your dentist or orthodontist to identify and correct the source. Do not try to file dentures or cut orthodontic wires yourself unless your dental team specifically guides you.
For braces, your orthodontist may suggest dental wax over an irritating bracket. If dentures cause pain, ask your dentist whether you should leave them out for part of the day while waiting for care. Keep dentures clean using the directions provided by your dental team.
Choose soft foods and avoid foods that sting or scrape the sore. Use a soft toothbrush and avoid harsh mouthwashes. These steps may reduce irritation while the cause is addressed. Results vary. A prescription rinse may ease pain, but it does not correct the fit of a dental device. Have any sore lasting more than two weeks examined.
