How long do mouth sores usually take to heal?
Short answer
Many minor mouth sores heal within one to two weeks. Results vary. Larger sores, ongoing rubbing, infections, or cancer treatment may lead to a longer healing time. Have a sore checked if it lasts more than two weeks, gets worse, or makes eating or drinking difficult.
Many small canker sores and sores from minor irritation heal within one to two weeks. Results vary. The timing depends on the size of the sore, its cause, your overall health, and whether the area keeps getting injured. A sore under a rubbing denture may persist until the fit is corrected.
Pain relief and healing are not the same thing. A rinse that numbs the mouth may make a sore feel less painful without making it heal faster. Results vary. Follow the treatment plan even if the sore feels better, and do not use extra medicine to try to speed healing.
Arrange a medical or dental exam if a sore lasts longer than two weeks, returns often, bleeds without a clear cause, or feels firm. Seek care sooner for fever, severe pain, or trouble drinking. People receiving chemotherapy or taking medicines that weaken the immune system should contact their care team promptly rather than waiting for a sore to heal.
