How soon might nitrofurantoin UTI treatment ease my symptoms?
Short answer
UTI symptoms may start to improve within the first few days of nitrofurantoin treatment. Results vary. Contact your physician if symptoms are not improving within 48 hours, or sooner if they worsen. Fever, chills, back or side pain, or vomiting need prompt care because they may signal a kidney infection.
Burning, urgency, and frequent urination may begin to ease within the first few days after starting nitrofurantoin. Results vary. The timing depends on whether the bacteria are sensitive to the medicine and whether your symptoms are caused by a bladder infection. Feeling better does not mean you should stop the prescribed course early.
Contact your physician if you have no improvement within 48 hours of starting treatment. Results vary. Contact them sooner if symptoms worsen. You may need a urine test, a urine culture, or a different treatment. Do not increase the dose or add another antibiotic yourself. Follow your prescribing physician’s directions and pharmacy label.
Fever, chills, pain in your back or side, or vomiting may point to a kidney infection. Nitrofurantoin is not appropriate for treating a kidney infection. Seek prompt in-person care for these symptoms rather than waiting for a shipment or an online reply. If symptoms return after you finish treatment, contact your physician instead of using leftover medication.
