How should I use a prescribed rinse for gum disease?
Short answer
Use a prescribed gum disease rinse exactly as the label and your dentist direct. Measure the dose, rinse for the stated time, and spit it out. Do not swallow it. The dose, timing around brushing, and treatment length depend on the product, so do not guess or share it.
Read the pharmacy label before your first dose. Different rinses can have different ingredients, strengths, and directions. Use the measuring cup or device provided rather than a kitchen spoon. Do not dilute the rinse unless the instructions specifically tell you to do so.
For chlorhexidine oral rinse, spit out the liquid after rinsing. Do not swallow it. Follow the label about waiting before eating, drinking, using water, or brushing. Toothpaste can affect how some rinses work, so ask your dentist or pharmacist how to space these steps if the directions are unclear.
If you miss a dose, follow the product instructions or ask your pharmacist. Do not double a dose to make up for one you missed. Keep the bottle out of reach of children, and do not share it with anyone else.
Use the rinse only for the prescribed length of time. Do not extend treatment or restart an old bottle without advice. If someone swallows more than a small accidental amount, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. Call 911 for trouble breathing or severe symptoms.
