How should I take escitalopram, and what if I miss a dose?

Short answer

Take escitalopram exactly as prescribed, usually once daily at about the same time, with or without food. If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless it is almost time for the next one. Skip the missed dose in that case. Never double doses to catch up.

Escitalopram is usually taken once a day, in the morning or evening, with or without food. Follow your prescription label rather than choosing a dose yourself. Your physician sets the dose based on your health history, other medicines, and how you respond to treatment. Ask your pharmacist if any directions are unclear.

If you miss a dose, take it when you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and return to your usual schedule. Do not take two doses at once. If you are unsure how close is too close, ask your pharmacist for advice specific to your schedule.

If you use a liquid form, measure it with the dosing device provided, not a kitchen spoon. Ask before changing the time you take it, especially if it makes you sleepy or disrupts sleep. Do not change your dose or stop taking it on your own. Keep the medicine out of reach of children and never share it.
