How long does escitalopram take to work?
Short answer
Escitalopram usually takes several weeks to provide its full benefit, and some people need longer. Results vary. Early changes may be subtle, so keep taking it as prescribed and attend follow-up visits. Tell your physician if symptoms worsen, side effects interfere with daily life, or you notice no improvement.
Escitalopram is not an immediate-relief medicine. It often takes several weeks to reach its full benefit, and some people need more time. Results vary. Changes in sleep, worry, energy, and mood may not happen at the same pace. A lack of early improvement does not automatically mean the medicine will not help.
Take your prescribed dose on a regular schedule. Do not take more medicine to try to speed up relief. Your physician may review how long you have taken it, missed doses, side effects, and symptom changes before deciding what to do next. Do not increase or stop your dose without guidance.
You do not need to wait for a routine follow-up if you feel worse. Contact your physician promptly about new agitation, severe restlessness, unusual behavior, or worsening depression. New or worsening suicidal thoughts need urgent attention, especially early in treatment or after dose changes. If you are in crisis, call or text 988. Call 911 if there is immediate danger.
