How is the dose of testosterone chosen, and what if I miss a dose?
Short answer
Your testosterone dose depends on the exact product, your blood levels, symptoms, and safety checks. Follow your prescription rather than another person’s schedule. If you miss a dose, ask your pharmacist or prescriber for product-specific instructions. Do not double a dose or change the amount on your own.
Testosterone products have different strengths, dosing schedules, and ways of entering the body. An injection schedule cannot be used as a guide for a gel, patch, or oral product. Even products that use the same route may have different directions. Read the label each time you receive a prescription.
Your physician chooses a starting dose and may adjust it after reviewing blood tests, symptoms, and side effects. Blood draw timing is important. Tell the care team exactly when you last used your medication so they can interpret the result correctly.
If you miss a dose, check the product instructions and contact your pharmacist or prescriber. The right next step depends on the form and how much time has passed. Do not take extra medication to make up for a missed dose unless your prescriber specifically directs it.
For injections, get training on measuring the dose, safe injection technique, and sharps disposal. Never share needles, syringes, or testosterone. Contact the pharmacy if the concentration or directions look different from your prior order.
