What side effects and warning signs should I watch for with testosterone therapy?

Short answer

Testosterone can cause acne, oily skin, swelling, breast tenderness, and irritation where it is applied or injected. It can also raise blood pressure and red blood cell counts. Get emergency help for chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, or stroke symptoms. Report new or worsening symptoms to your physician.

Side effects depend partly on the medication form and dose. Possible effects include acne, oily skin, breast tenderness, fluid retention, and skin or injection-site irritation. Testosterone can also reduce sperm production and may worsen sleep apnea in some people.

Some risks are not easy to notice at home. Red blood cell counts and blood pressure can rise without clear symptoms. That is why blood tests and checkups are a key part of care, not just an optional step when you feel unwell.

Call 911 for chest pain, sudden trouble breathing, fainting, or possible stroke symptoms such as face drooping, arm weakness, or trouble speaking. Seek prompt medical care for a painful, swollen leg or an erection lasting more than four hours. Severe allergic symptoms also need emergency care.

Tell your physician about new swelling, loud snoring, breathing pauses during sleep, trouble urinating, or major mood changes. Do not increase your dose to chase stronger effects. Follow the safety instructions for your exact product.
