At-home labs · FAQ
How is my information handled when I order at-home labs?
Short answer
Review Verra’s privacy notice and the testing lab’s consent terms before ordering at-home labs. Genetic testing can involve sensitive information and stored samples. Ask who receives your information, how long it is kept, and whether it may be used for research. Do not assume all tests have identical policies.
At-home testing can involve personal details, medical history, sample identifiers, and lab reports. Genetic tests can raise added questions about stored genetic data and the sample itself. Review both Verra’s privacy notice and the testing lab’s policies. Do not rely on a general promise of privacy in place of the actual terms.
Ask which organizations receive your information, why they need it, and how reports are delivered. Check whether a lab stores leftover samples, how long records are retained, and whether research use requires a separate choice. Also ask whether you can request sample destruction or data deletion and what legal recordkeeping limits may apply.
Use a secure personal email account and avoid sharing account access. Think carefully before downloading a report to a shared device or uploading genetic data to another service. Those services may have different privacy rules. If you have concerns about access by insurers, employers, or other parties, seek guidance before testing rather than assuming every use is prohibited.
