How do I switch from another vaginal treatment to Vaginal estriol cream?
Short answer
Switch to Vaginal estriol cream only with a plan from your prescribing physician. Tell them the name, strength, dose, and last use of your current treatment. Different hormone products are not interchangeable by dose. Do not overlap treatments, remove a prescribed ring, or change schedules without clear instructions.
A licensed physician in your state should review your current treatment before prescribing Vaginal estriol cream. Share the product name, strength, dose, schedule, and date of your last use. Include vaginal tablets, rings, creams, moisturizers, and any hormones taken by mouth or through the skin.
Estriol, estradiol, and other estrogen products differ. A number on one product’s label cannot be used to calculate a matching dose of another. Applicators also differ. Use the new prescription’s label and measuring device rather than carrying over instructions from your old treatment.
Ask your physician when to stop the old product and when to start the new one. If you use a vaginal ring, ask for clear removal instructions. Do not overlap hormone treatments unless the physician specifically directs you to do so.
Discuss why you want to switch, including irritation, cost, or ongoing symptoms. A switch may not address the cause of discomfort. Results vary. Compounded medications are prepared by a licensed pharmacy for one patient and are not FDA-approved.
