What side effects should I watch for with Vaginal estriol cream?
Short answer
Vaginal estriol cream may cause local burning, itching, irritation, discharge, or spotting. Breast tenderness or headache may also occur. Tell your physician about new or lasting symptoms, especially vaginal bleeding. Seek urgent care for chest pain, trouble breathing, one-sided leg swelling, stroke symptoms, or a severe allergic reaction.
Vaginal estriol cream may cause burning, itching, irritation, or changes in vaginal discharge. Headache, breast tenderness, and spotting may also occur. Some symptoms can come from the cream’s base rather than estriol itself. Ask the pharmacist for the ingredient list if you have allergies or sensitive skin.
Tell your prescribing physician if symptoms are new, bothersome, or do not go away. Report any vaginal bleeding, especially bleeding after menopause. Do not assume bleeding is an expected part of treatment. Pain, fever, sores, or unusual odor also need medical review rather than extra cream.
Vaginal use does not mean there is no absorption into the body. Your dose, formulation, and health history can affect risk. Discuss any history of blood clots, stroke, liver disease, or hormone-sensitive cancer with your physician.
Call 911 for chest pain, sudden trouble breathing, stroke symptoms, or a severe allergic reaction. Seek urgent care for one-sided leg swelling or pain. Compounded medications are prepared by a licensed pharmacy for one patient and are not FDA-approved.
