How do I switch from another treatment to Anxiety & depression medication?
Short answer
A licensed physician in your state must review your current treatment before you switch to sertraline or escitalopram for Anxiety & depression. Do not stop, overlap, or swap medicines on your own. The safest plan depends on the medication, dose, last dose taken, and your health history.
Switching to sertraline or escitalopram requires a plan from your prescribing physician. During your visit, share the name and dose of your current treatment, how long you have used it, and when you last took it. Explain why you want to switch, including side effects or symptoms that are still troubling you.
Some switches need a gradual dose reduction. Others need a waiting period before the new medicine begins. In certain cases, a physician may direct a brief overlap, but this is not safe for every combination. MAO inhibitors require special waiting periods. Do not use leftover tablets to create your own switching schedule.
A licensed physician in your state decides if this treatment is appropriate and provides directions for each step. Ask for clarification if any instructions are unclear. A new medicine may take several weeks to assess. Results vary. Report worsening symptoms or side effects promptly. If you are in crisis, call or text 988. Call 911 for immediate danger.
