How are medication doses managed for obesity and weight management?
Short answer
Weight management doses depend on the medicine, your health, and how you tolerate treatment. Some medicines start at a low dose and increase gradually. Follow your prescription exactly. Do not increase a dose, repeat an injection, or double a missed dose without instructions from your physician or pharmacist.
There is no single dosing schedule for all weight management medicines. Some start at a low dose and increase over time. Your physician may delay an increase or change the plan based on side effects and your medical needs. A higher dose is not automatically the right dose for you.
Read the pharmacy label before each dose. For an injectable medicine, make sure you understand the prescribed amount, the product’s concentration, and how to use the device or syringe. Milligrams, milliliters, and syringe units mean different things. Do not use a conversion chart from social media or reuse instructions from a different product.
Compounded medications are prepared by a licensed pharmacy for one patient and are not FDA-approved. If your prescription is compounded, ask the pharmacist to explain any unclear directions before using it. Missed-dose instructions differ by medicine and by how long it has been since your last dose. Contact your physician or pharmacist rather than guessing or doubling up.
