Can male pattern hair loss treatment cause shedding at first?
Short answer
Temporary increased shedding can happen after starting minoxidil for male pattern hair loss. It may reflect a shift in the hair growth cycle, but it does not prove treatment is working. Results vary. Tell your physician about heavy, prolonged, patchy, or painful shedding rather than assuming it is expected.
Some people notice extra shedding soon after starting minoxidil. This can happen as hair follicles shift between stages of the growth cycle. It is not something everyone experiences, and it is not a reliable sign of future regrowth. Results vary.
Your product instructions or prescriber may explain what to watch for and when to check in. Do not increase the amount you use or add another hair medicine to try to stop the shedding. Ask your physician before changing a prescription or stopping because of a new symptom.
Not all shedding during treatment comes from the treatment itself. Recent illness, major stress, weight changes, low nutrient levels, and other medicines can contribute. Male pattern hair loss can also occur at the same time as another hair disorder.
Contact your physician if shedding is heavy, lasts beyond the period they described, or comes with bald patches, scalp redness, pain, or scaling. Photos and a record of when the shedding began can help guide the review. An in-person exam may be needed.
