How do finasteride and dutasteride work for male pattern hair loss?
Short answer
Finasteride and dutasteride lower DHT by blocking enzymes that convert testosterone into DHT. This may slow follicle shrinkage and hair thinning in male pattern hair loss. Results vary. Oral finasteride is approved for this condition; dutasteride is used off-label. Both require a physician's review of benefits and possible risks.
DHT is part of the process that causes sensitive hair follicles to shrink in male pattern hair loss. Finasteride and dutasteride block an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase, which helps the body make DHT from testosterone. Dutasteride blocks more types of this enzyme than finasteride.
Lowering DHT may slow further thinning and allow some hairs to grow thicker. Results vary. A stronger effect on DHT does not guarantee a better result for an individual. Neither medicine creates new hair follicles, and neither is a cure for male pattern hair loss.
Oral finasteride is FDA-approved for male pattern hair loss. Dutasteride is FDA-approved for an enlarged prostate, but its use for hair loss is off-label. A licensed physician in your state decides whether either medicine is appropriate for you.
These medicines can cause sexual side effects and other problems. They also lower PSA levels, which can affect interpretation of prostate screening tests. Tell any clinician ordering a PSA test that you take one of these medicines. Do not take finasteride and dutasteride together unless specifically directed.
