Can I use chlorhexidine with other mouthwashes or medicines?
Short answer
Ask your dentist or pharmacist before combining chlorhexidine with another mouthwash, dental gel, or whitening treatment. Some products can interfere with its action or add irritation. Share all medicines, supplements, and oral care products you use. Do not mix chlorhexidine with other products or change prescribed medicines on your own.
Your dentist or pharmacist should review the products you use before you add chlorhexidine. Include prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, supplements, toothpaste, mouthwash, whitening treatments, and dental gels. Also mention products used for dry mouth, mouth sores, or dentures. The full ingredient list matters more than the product's brand name.
Some toothpaste ingredients can interfere with chlorhexidine when used close together. Other mouthwashes or whitening products may add irritation. Your dentist may recommend using products at different times or leaving out a nonessential product during treatment. Do not combine products in a cup or put extra ingredients into the chlorhexidine bottle.
Do not stop another prescribed medicine without advice from the clinician who prescribed it. If another clinician gives you a new oral treatment, tell them you use chlorhexidine. Ask your pharmacist to check the instructions if two labels seem to conflict. This is especially important after dental surgery, when you may have a separate plan for pain medicine, wound care, and mouth rinses.
