Can I stop taking Anxiety & depression medication when I feel better?

Short answer

Do not stop sertraline or escitalopram for Anxiety & depression on your own, even if you feel better. Results vary. Stopping suddenly can cause withdrawal-like symptoms or a return of symptoms. Ask your prescribing physician about when to stop and whether you need a gradual dose reduction based on your history.

Talk with your prescribing physician before stopping sertraline or escitalopram. Feeling better does not always mean treatment should end right away. Results vary. Your physician will consider how long you have taken it, your current symptoms, past episodes, and any side effects before making a plan with you.

Stopping suddenly can cause dizziness, nausea, sweating, anxiety, irritability, trouble sleeping, or sensations that feel like electric shocks. Symptoms of anxiety or depression may also return. These medicines are not considered addictive, but your body can adjust to taking them regularly. That is why a gradual dose reduction may be needed.

Follow the specific taper plan your physician gives you. Do not split tablets, skip days, or lower your dose unless instructed. Contact your physician if symptoms appear during a dose reduction or you are running out of medication. If you develop suicidal thoughts or are in crisis, call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Call 911 if there is immediate danger.
