Can I stop pilocarpine or switch from tablets to troches?
Short answer
Talk with your prescriber before stopping pilocarpine or switching between tablets and compounded troches. Do not transfer the dose or schedule from one form to another yourself. A physician licensed in your state decides whether a change is appropriate and gives you directions for the new treatment plan.
Your prescriber should guide any planned change to pilocarpine treatment. This includes stopping it, changing the dose, or switching between approved tablets and compounded troches. Different forms may have different instructions, so do not carry over a tablet dose or schedule on your own.
Tell your physician why you want a change. Reasons may include sweating, stomach upset, trouble using the product, or dry mouth that remains bothersome. Include when symptoms started and how they relate to each dose. This helps your physician review the next step.
Pilocarpine does not remove every underlying cause of dry mouth. Symptoms may return or remain after you stop treatment. Results vary. Ask about other ways to manage dry mouth and whether the cause needs more testing or an in-person exam.
Compounded medications are prepared by a licensed pharmacy for one patient and are not FDA-approved. If a switch is prescribed, confirm when to stop the old product and start the new one. Do not use both together unless specifically directed. Severe side effects need urgent care.
