Can I stop estriol or switch to another vaginal estrogen treatment?
Short answer
You can discuss stopping estriol or switching treatments with your physician at any time. Do not assume another estrogen product uses the same dose or schedule. Vaginal symptoms may return after treatment stops. Results vary. Your physician can review side effects, your goals, and FDA-approved or nonhormonal alternatives.
Estriol treatment should be reviewed over time rather than continued without follow-up. Tell your physician if you want to stop because of side effects, cost, application problems, or a change in your health. The best next step depends on why you use it and the exact formula.
There is no universal stopping or switching plan for compounded estriol. Ask your physician whether you should stop directly or follow another schedule. Menopause-related vaginal dryness may return after estrogen treatment ends. Results vary. Nonhormonal moisturizers and lubricants may be options to discuss.
If you switch to an FDA-approved vaginal estrogen product, the dose and measuring device may be different. Do not convert doses yourself or use both products together unless directed. A licensed physician in your state decides whether the new treatment is appropriate.
Serious warning signs need urgent care, not just a routine medication change. These include chest pain, sudden breathing problems, or stroke symptoms. Compounded medications are prepared by a licensed pharmacy for one patient and are not FDA-approved.
