Dental · FAQ
Who should avoid certain prescription dental products?
Short answer
Some dental products are unsafe for people with specific allergies, health conditions, or swallowing problems. Pilocarpine is not appropriate with uncontrolled asthma or certain eye conditions. Age, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and other medicines also matter. A licensed dentist in your state must review the exact product and your health history first.
There is no single safety rule for every product in this dental category. Avoid any ingredient that has caused an allergic reaction unless a clinician has clearly advised otherwise. Tell your dentist about allergies to chlorhexidine, local anesthetics, or other mouth care ingredients. A compounded formula may contain several active and inactive ingredients.
Pilocarpine is not appropriate for people with uncontrolled asthma or certain eye conditions, such as narrow-angle glaucoma. Some heart or lung conditions may also require extra caution. Products that numb the mouth need special care in people with swallowing problems. Rinses that must be spit out may not be suitable for someone who cannot do that reliably.
Tell your dentist if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or seeking treatment for a child. Do not share a prescription with another person. A licensed dentist in your state decides whether treatment is appropriate and whether an in-person exam is needed. If a product is not safe for you, ask about other options rather than changing the formula or dose yourself.
