What happens if I stop topical tretinoin or change its strength?
Short answer
Tretinoin does not usually need to be tapered, but talk with your prescriber before stopping or changing strength. Acne may return, and skin benefits may fade after treatment ends. Results vary. A stronger product is not always a better choice, especially if your current routine already causes irritation.
Topical tretinoin does not usually cause withdrawal or require a taper. Still, discuss planned changes with your prescriber so you have a clear next step. If you stop, acne may return over time, and benefits for fine lines or uneven tone may gradually fade. Results vary. Continue sunscreen even if you stop tretinoin.
Do not increase the strength or frequency on your own. A higher strength may bring more dryness, redness, and peeling without being the best fit for your skin. Your prescriber may first review how often you apply it, how much you use, and which other products touch your skin.
If you paused because of irritation, ask when and how to restart. After a long break, your skin may need a slower schedule again. If you are switching to another acne medicine or retinoid, ask whether to leave a gap or avoid overlap. Stop and seek advice for severe skin reactions rather than continuing until your next routine visit.
