Weight loss · FAQ
What happens if I stop my weight loss medication?
Short answer
Appetite may increase and some weight may return after you stop a weight loss medicine. Results vary. Blood sugar may also change, especially if you have diabetes. Talk with your physician before stopping, because the safest plan depends on the medicine and some oral medicines need a gradual dose reduction.
Weight management can require long-term care. After stopping a medicine, its effects on appetite and fullness can fade, and some weight may return. Results vary. This does not mean you have failed. It means that your body and health needs may still need support after medication ends.
Speak with your physician before stopping or taking a long break. Some medicines in an Oral weight kit may need a gradual dose reduction. If a medicine also affects your blood sugar, stopping it may require a diabetes treatment review. Your physician can help plan follow-up and discuss nutrition, activity, sleep, and other care options.
Do not restart a GLP-1 medicine at your previous dose after a gap without checking first. Depending on the medicine and length of the break, you may need a different restart schedule. Canceling a payment plan and stopping a prescription are separate decisions. Ask about both so that account changes do not leave you without clear medical instructions.
