How should I take valacyclovir, and what if I miss a dose?
Short answer
Take valacyclovir exactly as prescribed, with or without food. The dose and treatment length depend on your infection and kidney function. If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless it is nearly time for the next one. Skip it then; do not double your dose.
Valacyclovir dosing is not the same for every infection. A cold sore plan may be much shorter than a shingles plan. Daily treatment for genital herpes uses a different schedule from treatment for a single outbreak. Follow your prescription label rather than a schedule you find online or one that worked for someone else.
You can take valacyclovir with or without food. If it upsets your stomach, taking it with food may help. Results vary. Drink fluids as advised by your clinician. If you have kidney or heart disease or a fluid limit, ask how much fluid is appropriate rather than increasing it on your own.
If you miss a dose, take it when you remember. If the next dose is nearly due, skip the missed dose and return to your regular schedule. Do not take two doses together to catch up. Ask your pharmacist if the timing is unclear, especially for a short treatment course. Do not change your dose without medical guidance.
