How should I take Cold sore treatment when tingling or burning starts?
Short answer
Take Cold sore treatment exactly as your prescribing physician and pharmacy label direct, usually starting at the first tingling, itching, or burning. You can take valacyclovir with or without food. Drink water with it, and follow any fluid limits your clinician has given you. Do not add extra doses.
Start Cold sore treatment at the first sign of an outbreak if that is what your prescription label directs. Early signs can include tingling, itching, or burning near the lip before a blister appears. Follow your prescribing physician’s instructions for the amount and timing of each dose.
Valacyclovir can be taken with or without food. If it bothers your stomach, ask your pharmacist about taking it with a meal. Drink water regularly unless a clinician has told you to limit fluids. A phone reminder can help you keep track of the second dose. If you have trouble swallowing tablets, ask the pharmacist before crushing or changing them.
Wash your hands after touching the affected area. Avoid kissing and oral sex during symptoms, and do not share lip products. Treatment does not remove the virus from your body or eliminate the chance of spreading it. Do not put the tablets directly on the sore. Contact your clinician if symptoms involve your eye or you are unsure the lesion is a cold sore.
