How should I apply a prescription rosacea cream?

Short answer

Apply your rosacea cream exactly as the prescription label directs. The amount, timing, and treatment area depend on its ingredients. Gently wash and dry your skin first, unless your instructions say otherwise. Keep skin medicines out of your eyes and mouth, and ask your pharmacist about layering other skin products.

There is no single application schedule for every rosacea medicine. Check the label for how much to use, where to apply it, and how often. Some products are meant for affected areas rather than individual bumps. If the directions are unclear, ask your pharmacist or prescribing physician before the first use.

In general, start with clean, dry skin and wash your hands after applying the medicine. Avoid the eyes, lips, inside of the nose, and broken skin unless your instructions specifically say otherwise. Do not put a facial skin medicine into your eyes, even if you have eye symptoms related to rosacea.

Ask how to fit moisturizer, sunscreen, and makeup into your routine. Let each product settle before adding another, and avoid scrubbing or rubbing hard. If you miss a dose, follow the product's instructions rather than doubling the next application. For compounded medications, use the storage instructions and beyond-use date on the pharmacy label. Contact the pharmacy if the medicine changes color, texture, or smell.
