How quickly does lidocaine work, and how long does numbness last?
Short answer
Lidocaine generally starts numbing the treated area within minutes, but the timing and duration depend on the product and application site. Results vary. Follow the waiting time on your label. Do not apply extra medicine to speed up the effect or make numbness last longer without your prescriber's guidance.
Lidocaine acts locally after it reaches the nerves in the treated tissue. Numbness often begins within minutes, but there is no single start time or duration for all products. Results vary. Strength, formulation, application site, and the amount used can all affect the experience.
A mouth rinse may have different timing from a spray intended for penile use. Follow your own product's instructions about when to apply it and how long to wait before an activity. Directions from another product may not apply to yours.
If you do not notice the expected effect, do not immediately repeat the dose. Extra medicine can build up and increase the risk of serious side effects. Ask your pharmacist or prescriber what to do if the prescribed amount does not seem helpful.
Numbness can also last beyond the period of useful relief. Avoid activities that could injure numb tissue. Contact your prescriber if numbness lasts longer than expected or if you develop increasing irritation, pain, or swelling.
