How do sildenafil and tadalafil work for erectile dysfunction (ED)?
Short answer
Sildenafil and tadalafil treat erectile dysfunction (ED) by helping blood flow into the penis during sexual stimulation. They do not create sexual desire or cause an automatic erection. Results vary. A licensed physician in your state decides whether either medicine is appropriate based on your health and other medications.
Sildenafil and tadalafil belong to a group of medicines called PDE5 inhibitors. They support a natural process that relaxes blood vessels in the penis during sexual stimulation. This allows more blood to enter and can help with getting and keeping an erection. Results vary.
These medicines do not create sexual desire. You still need sexual stimulation, and the medicine does not cause a constant erection while it is active. They also do not protect against sexually transmitted infections or prevent pregnancy. Continue using protection when needed.
ED medicine does not address every possible cause of erection problems. Stress, low testosterone, medication effects, or another health condition may need separate care. Your physician will consider these factors along with your heart health and current medicines. Never combine ED medicines or add extra doses unless your prescriber specifically directs you to do so. A licensed physician in your state decides whether treatment is appropriate and provides instructions for the prescribed product.
