How do ingredients and delivery devices differ for compounded vs brand GLP-1 medications?
Short answer
Ingredients, concentrations, and injection devices can differ between brand and compounded GLP-1 products. Do not assume one product’s instructions apply to another. Compounded medications are prepared by a licensed pharmacy for one patient and are not FDA-approved. Ask the pharmacy to confirm the exact ingredients, strength, device, and storage directions.
Brand products have defined ingredients, strengths, and approved delivery formats. Compounded preparations may have different inactive ingredients, concentrations, or packaging. Some may include added ingredients. An added vitamin or other ingredient does not by itself establish a medical benefit. Results vary.
Compounded medications are prepared by a licensed pharmacy for one patient and are not FDA-approved. Ask for the full ingredient list, especially if you have allergies. If a product lists semaglutide sodium or semaglutide acetate, contact your prescriber and pharmacist before use. These salt forms are different from the active ingredient used in approved semaglutide drugs.
The delivery device also matters. A vial and syringe require different steps from a prefilled injection device. Even two vials may have different concentrations. Do not transfer a dose calculation from one product to another.
A licensed physician in your state decides whether treatment is appropriate. Have the pharmacy review your label, measuring steps, storage needs, and discard date. If the medicine arrives without clear directions or the label does not match your prescription, do not use it until the pharmacy resolves the issue.
