Can I combine topical tretinoin with other skin care products?
Short answer
You can often use a gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen with tretinoin. Ask your prescriber before adding retinol, exfoliating acids, benzoyl peroxide, or other acne treatments. Some combinations increase irritation or need separate timing. Share your full routine, including nonprescription products, so your treatment plan accounts for them.
Keep your routine simple when starting tretinoin. A gentle cleanser, plain moisturizer, and daily sunscreen are common basics. Bring your full product list to your visit, including acne washes, serums, spot treatments, and any other prescription skin medicines. Ingredients and timing matter more than a product's marketing claims.
Retinol, other retinoids, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, scrubs, and alcohol-heavy products may add irritation. Benzoyl peroxide can also irritate skin and may affect certain tretinoin formulations when applied together. Depending on your product, your prescriber may recommend using them at different times or choosing a different routine. Do not assume every combination is unsafe or suitable.
Ask before waxing treated skin or booking a chemical peel, laser treatment, or other skin procedure. These can increase the risk of skin injury while using tretinoin. Tell the professional performing the procedure that you use it. Also share oral medicines that increase sun sensitivity. Your prescriber can decide whether any product, medicine, or procedure calls for a temporary pause.
